Admission Tests (11+ Examinations)
Admission to Plymouth High School is made through Plymouth City Council. Pupils are selected through academic ability with all candidates required to sit the 11+ examination. The examination is designed to measure a child’s academic ability and determine whether she would be suited to a grammar school education.
The 11+ examinations assess your child’s academic ability by using GL Assessment English Comprehension and Mathematics papers (multiple choice) and an extended writing paper (used only in the case of an appeal). https://www.gl-assessment.co.uk/
GL Assessment have released free familiarisation materials on their website for parents and students who would like to see the layout prior to the main 11+ examinations.
The 11-plus examination will take place before the closing date for submission of the application form for a school place and parents / carers are required to register their child to take the examination. Plymouth High School’s published admission number (PAN) for Year 7 is 120. For the last few years the school has received more applications than places available. There may be places available for students seeking transfer in years 8, 9 and 10. In year admissions are made via an application through Plymouth City Council and the satisfactory completion of a school set admissions test to clarify candidates’ ability and aptitude.
For entry in September 2020 the 11+ examination dates are on the Saturday 14th and Saturday 21st September for the Mathematics and English Papers (2 separate papers). The registration process will be available between Tuesday 23rd April and 30th August 2019. Results will be sent out on Thursday 10 October 2019.
How to Register for 11+ Examination
To register your daughter to sit the 11+ examination, parents/carers need to apply through the Plymouth City Council website:
The results of the examination will not confirm that a place will be offered. The letter is intended to allow parents time to make an informed choice of school before they have to express their preferences for a Secondary School via Plymouth City Council’s admissions application form (deadline 31st October 2019).
Offer letters will be issued on the offer date of 2nd March 2020. Only at this stage will you know if your child has been successful in gaining a place. Parents/carers to respond to the offer by 16th March 2020.
In the event that an applicant is denied a place at the school, the parent/carer will have the right of appeal to an independent appeal panel. Information relating to the appeal process can be obtained from Plymouth City Council’s School Admissions Team and will be outlined in any letter of refusal of admission.
