Electron Microscopy at the University of Plymouth
On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th January, students from year 12 A Level Biology visited the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre at the University of Plymouth. Students were given a detailed overview of techniques involved in both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, including sample preparation and applications of each method.
Several students had the opportunity to operate the Transmission electron microscope, producing images of sub-cellular structures at magnifications of over 100,000x and resolutions not achievable with a light microscope.
This was a valuable experience for students to provide an insight into the imaging methods used across the Sciences as well as supporting their studies in A Level Biology.
