Earth Alliance Group 2021
We have many aims which we would like to complete, not only on a school level but on a much wider scale as we are joining an academy next month, we hope to influence other schools to go more green as well.
Some of our goals include:
-
Produce a video about what the environment means to PHS students
-
Have a city wide litter pick day in town
-
Getting double glazed windows in some areas of the school
-
Write articles for the school website
-
Start a composting scheme around school….and more!
Lara and Amy would love to include as many students as possible as we know that many of you feel just the same way as they do. If anyone is interested in joining their effort whether it be ideas or even just questions about climate change please email at either ahs15@tsatstudent.org.uk or lbn11@tsatstudent.org.uk
We hope to hear from you soon.

Meet the Team
Hello, my name is Amy and I am very passionate about protecting our planet from climate change and human action. Since I was a child I have wanted to become a marine biologist to help protect and conserve the life in the ocean, especially marine mammals. Personally I believe that if everyone does their part we can stop the worst impacts of climate change and a lot of this can come from the small things just as altering your diet and buying sustainable products.
Hi, my name is Lara and just like many of the students at Plymouth High, I feel very passionately about our environment and the necessary steps that need to be taken to protect it. I have been fortunate enough to have grown up surrounded by nature. However, it has only been in the past couple of years that I have begun to realise the sort of stresses it is under as a result of human actions. Setting up the Earth Alliance here at Plymouth High is our first step towards meaningful change.
As our role as Earth Alliance leaders draws to a close, we wanted to update you all on what we have been working on behind the scenes.
The last week has seen us meet with both James Fenlon, the Head of Estates and Health and Safety for the Trust as well as Sarah Daffery, Catering Assurance Lead. Earlier in the year our initiatives were awarded the funding to go ahead. Within this meeting we began to finalise the plans for their implementation. Smart meters will begin to be installed within all Trust schools by Easter 2022 and will be finished by the summer holidays. These smart meters will help us to track our energy usage and allow us to make more of a conscious effort to reduce our consumption by being more efficient in the ways that we use energy.
There are many ways we are looking to decrease the environmental footprint of our food service areas. We are aiming to make our menu more seasonal to reduce food miles. An enquiry into where we get our fish from is underway to make sure that, as a school, we are not supporting overfishing. Over the past seven years that we have been students at Plymouth High we have seen vast improvements in our canteen both for the students and environment; we are now free from single- use plastic which is a huge achievement. We hope that progress like this only grows, and that it will now be made easier due to the formation of Earth Alliance.
The school strike that was held on Friday the 5th of November was a complete success and reminded us of how much we all care about this issue. We have sent a letter to our MP Luke Pollard to inform him of our actions and to ask him to make sure that the climate crisis remains high on his agenda.
It has been a real honour to try and make our school more sustainable over the last 12 months. There is still a lot of work yet to be done but we are looking forward to handing our roles on and watching as the next leadership team aids Plymouth High in becoming even greener.
Thank you for your support
