Library News

A round up of the events that have taken place in the library in the Autumn Term One 2024

2 sentence scary story competition

Our ‘2 Sentence Scary Story’ competition was a real chance to showcase storytelling skills- a challenge to create suspense, fear and mystery with only a few words!

At the time of writing, we are bravely making our way through a pile of over 60 chilling tales!

House points were awarded for every entry.

Congratulations to Latimer with 30 entries.

We counted up the votes and the 2 sentence scary story that received the most votes was written by Maeve F in 8L. Well Done!

Black History Month

This year the theme for Black History Month is ‘Reclaiming Narratives.’ Books can offer a window into the complex history of Black culture.

We believe reading is an essential tool for fostering empathy and deepening our understanding of the lives and experiences of others.

Dyslexia Awareness Week

We are constantly striving to provide a diverse and inclusive catalogue, that meets the needs of all reading abilities and interests.

October saw Dyslexia Awareness Week. We took a look at our ‘dyslexia friendly’ provision. We’ve increased our stock and added purple stickers to the spine to make them easier to find.

Year 7 Reading Achievement Badges

All Year 7s are given a Reading Log to keep track of the library books they have read and reviewed.

There are 3 levels to work towards: 10 books (a house badge), 25 books (a silver badge) and 50 books, where you will receive a gold pin badge and letter of commendation from the Head of Year.

Last year, only 2 students achieved the prestigious gold badge!

We are only 6 weeks in and already 3 dedicated students have achieved their first award- 5 house points and a house pin badge. Congratulations to Gabby 7A, Annelise 7L and Gwen 7L.

Keep up the good work.

Film Book Quiz

The first book quiz of this academic year was a popular one!

This particular quiz was written by one of our talented student librarians who wanted to do something a little different and write the questions based on books that have been adapted for the cinema.

Team places had filled up within a couple of days of the quiz being advertised and we even had to create a reserve team list just in case a team didn’t turn up on the day.

On the day of the quiz, the library was packed full of students across all year groups ready to put their knowledge to the test. The questions varied in difficulty and featured questions from famous contemporary novels such as Heartstopper and the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and more classic novels such as Pride and Prejudice and Mary Poppins.

Well done to the winning team who were the lucky winners of a box of chocolates!

Our next book quiz, happening after half term, is our Harry Potter quiz to celebrate national Harry Potter Book Day. If this is your thing, please keep a look out for any emails/ posters we send out advertising the event.

This one usually fills up very quickly, so don’t delay!

Student Librarians

Here in the Library, we’re very lucky to have a group of dedicated student librarians who come along each lunchtime and help us out. The current cohort has worked with us for a year and have been a fantastic help, but the time has come to recruit new student librarians for this academic year.

Our student librarians help organise events, displays and keep our library running smoothly. Application forms are available from the librarians (open to year 8 and above). The deadline is Wednesday 6th November.
