Holocaust Memorial Day 2023

Fragility of Freedom is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024. Holocaust remembrance is important to us at PHSG, therefore we are supporting the Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 today to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered during the Holocaust.

Freedom means different things to different people. What is clear is that in every genocide that has taken place, those who are targeted for persecution have had their freedom restricted and removed, before many of them are murdered.

Freedom is fragile, and it cannot be taken for granted. Here are some examples of ways in which the freedoms of people are targeted:

Freedom of religion and freedom to self-identify

Freedom of reproduction

Freedom of movement

False freedom

Freedom of expression

Freedom to live

Today, many people in western democracies take freedoms for granted – on this HMD, we can reflect on how these freedoms need to be valued, and on how many people around the world face restrictions to their freedoms to live, worship, work and love freely.
Our Library Team have created a reading list for students who are interested in recommendations on the theme of the holocaust. Also, students are encouraged to pop along to the library and take a look at the library display provided.
