PHSG students receive an insight into Oxbridge with a presentation and workshop.
Last week, PHSG was fortunate to receive a visit from Rosie Gough, who works in admissions at the University of Cambridge to deliver a presentation to students who may consider Oxbridge as their post sixth-form destination.
Rosie presented to a number of year 11 students who have been identified as being on track to achieve superb grades at GCSE. She explained what makes Oxford and Cambridge different to other universities and dispelled some myths; students were surprised to learn that 73% of offers last year were made to state school students! Rosie explained what makes a candidate stand out and gave the students advice on what they should start doing now to make a future application successful.
Following this, Rosie gave the year 12 ‘Aim High’ group a focused workshop on how to compile a competitive personal statement for an application to Oxbridge and top Russell Group universities. The session explored exactly what admissions tutors do (and don’t) want to see and how to include specific evidence of passion for a subject. The Aim High Group will soon be visited by PHSG alumni who are currently studying at Oxford and Cambridge to help with the process of editing.
